Great post, very true. I know our state has a lot of reasons to dislike Ohio (most of them sports-related), but the “at least we don’t live in Ohio” troupe I see a lot from local media and people around here gets a little old.

I think a lot of people’s perception of Ohio is based on the view from a car on the highway, instead of a lot of the great things going on in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and other cities. We’re more similar than we are different, and as you noted, and we can learn something from places like Columbus.

I enjoy your Daily Detroit posts. I found your promotion of Columbus too narrowly focused. I see the issue holding Columbus back is its demonstrably conservative and dare say it reactionary Ohio state governance. The laws being passed in Ohio will promote a brain drain for Columbus specifically and the state as a whole. Not only that what female high school senior would choose to go to college at any Ohio school? Will your civil liberties still be intact when you graduate? Will you still have agency for your personhood? And if you did graduate from an Ohio college why stay when there is a brighter future with greater freedom and liberty elsewhere? Just sayin’.

I almost commented on your NYC post but didn’t have time. It sounds like you got a lot of feedback. 😄 Tbh, I have never liked NYC. All the things you touted are mostly lost on me. One of the reasons I stayed here is because I specifically didn’t want to be in a denser city/environment.

Also, if I may be crass, I can get a much higher lifestyle here. I have friends in NYC that bought a well into 7 figures condo in Brooklyn Heights which is smaller than one floor of my home in IV. It boggles the mind.

Not for nothing everyone moving into IV over the past 5 years is older millennials/Gen-Xers with kids--babies and elementary school children everywhere. (Myself included.)

I very much enjoyed the story on Columbus, Ohio. I’m a native Detroiter, now living in Fort Lauderdale, and have visited Columbus many times. I definitely share in your appreciation of the things that make it a great city.
